8-Bit EscapeEscape Room HerndonEscape roomIRLOne caveat first: I grew up in the 80s so a little biased. That said: LOVED this room! As a starting point, the game premise is incredibly unique, and well executed. And the theming gave me so many childhood flashbacks I was grinning ear to ear even when we had barely started the game. And the ending was a beautifully designed surprise. If I had any complaints, it would only be that the room was a little tight for our group of 5, and there were a lot of lock puzzles to solve. That said, they still managed to squeeze in some new and unique puzzles I had never seen before but were perfect for the time period theme.
Cryptid GroveEscape Room HerndonEscape roomIRLAnother exceptional room by Escape Room Herndon, with a very unique theme that was flat out fun. From a pure escape room perspective, there was a good mix of puzzles, may of which we had never seen before giving it a special touch. That said, nothing was too hard or frustrating, and we were able to make it out in 42 min with a family of five. (It may have helped though that our kids were huge fans of Gravity Falls, and they immediately spied all the hidden references mixed into the game :) ) The theming was top notch and had a lot of detail, could have spent the full hour just reading the cryptid backstories. All in all, a great room suitable for families, even with younger kids.

Jewel of the SeaIntrepid Escape RoomsEscape roomIRLThis was a great game that took a fairly common escape room theme of pirates and took it to the next level. The theming was spot on, and it had some very unique puzzles I have never seen elsewhere. There was one effect in particular that blew me away (you'll know it when you see it!) Our game master Dani did an exceptional job and really got in the act during the intro. Only issue was the room was a bit tight for our group of 5; think 3 or 4 would be perfect for it.
Special Ops: Mysterious MarketThe Escape Game - Penn QuarterEscape roomIRLThis was an incredible room, combining some of the best theming and gameplay we have seen anywhere. It has some very unique puzzles, that forced some creative thinking to solve but was not so hard you ever got frustrated. It also had a very unique plot twist that was expertly executed. Highly recommend this game.
Timeliner: Train Through TimeThe Escape Game - TampaEscape roomIRLGreat room with a unique premise that stands out from most games. Very good mix of puzzles and there were a lot of them. Some we got right away, and some took a bit of a leap of logic, but still very clever. Even though there are some old school mechanical locks and puzzles, there are some great use of technology in the room. Definitely recommend.
Maritime MutinyEscape Room HerndonEscape roomIRLDespite a pretty standard pirate escape room theme, this room still managed to shine though with superior theming and unique puzzles. Also greatly enjoyed the addition of the bonus puzzles--we finished the room itself in 38 minutes, but the puzzles gave us an added 22 minutes of fun and challenge, we completed those with literally 13 seconds left! We would still choose some of the other Herndon rooms over this one, but it is a top notch option.
Ruins: Forbidden TreasureThe Escape Game - TysonsEscape roomIRLVery well done tombs theme; fun story that made for a different first room from the other 'tomb' escape rooms we have done. Really enjoyed the unique mix of puzzles throughout; many we had never seen before. Although a decent amount of lock puzzles, there was also plenty of high tech, and used in really cool ways. Another excellent Escape Game room!
The DepthsThe Escape Game - TysonsEscape roomIRLBeen wanting to do this one for a long time and it lived up to expectations. Very creative puzzles, and good use of tech, especially in how the game shared clues to solving the mystery in the storyline. Props and tech were top notch and room had some really creative puzzles. Will say the ending could be hard for a group less than 4 but still doable. Our family really enjoyed this one!
Arcade Challenge [prev. Retro Replay]The Great Escape Room - Arlington [prev. Escape Room Arlington]Escape roomIRLWas really disappointed in this one. To start off, the arcade machines featured so prominently in the photos were not working. While this did not impact game play, really detracted from the atmosphere. The room overall was really worn, and parts of the set that players must handle, came apart at first touch. In another part, there was a drawer that was stuck closed, so we left it alone not wanting to break anything, then the gamester had to tell us to force it open. In addition, game required a lengthy spiel from the gamemaster as to what was and was not off limits but the first puzzle required entering an area she said was not part of the game. Finally, the puzzle design was really lacking, many required unreasonable leaps in logic, or in particular puzzle, misinterpreted the 80s elements it was supposed to use, that caused great confusion.
