Permanently Closed - “As I watch it slowly rotate on my desk, I find myself coming back to the same question: If this is a fundamental truth of our universe, and it truly does exist, then why was he the one who found it, and not some alchemist or novice practitioner from antiquity? And furthermore, given how responsive it is to even my crude methods, how is it that this was not found sooner? Buergerite may not be the easiest thing to come by, but one can get a close enough analogue with other tourmaline minerals, although the specific pyroelectric nature of the mineral is hard to approximate. As is the case with these things, I’ve found that for every answer I’ve uncovered, twelve more spawn to drive me deeper into the abyss that is the late Doctor’s research. Either I am onto the biggest discovery Mankind has ever known, or I am simply the next in line to uncover a fatal truth that has claimed him and God knows how many others. Either way, I must press on. I’m already too far in, and I must see where the rabbit hole goes. I’ll never be able to live with myself otherwise.” — J.D. Howell

The Study: Trapped in the mysterious room of the deceased J. D. Howell, we had to navigate our way through the puzzles to solve the mystery. Pros: The game master's costume and dramatic entrance helped generate enthusiasm and establish a sense of ambience for the game. Upon entering the room we found a very small game play area with plenty of puzzles to confound us. A mixture of puzzle types from symbolic to mechanical allowed us to exercise various parts of our brain throughout the hour. The set-design was basic but fit well with the theme. Cons: Despite the enthusiasm of the staff and the game master, we did not really understand the storyline and were therefore less invested in the outcome of the game perhaps than we should have been. The puzzles were logical, but flimsy construction and design made solving some of them near impossible. Although we made it out successfully, we were more confounded by the shoddiness of some of the props and pieces than the challenge of the puzzles themselves. Recommended for pairs or groups of four or less.
