Can you and your shipmates solve the crime and get off the ship? That’s the last thing you remember is relaxing in Hong Kong harbor celebrating Christmas with a friendly man who befriends you and buys you drinks. The next day, you wake aboard the huge 3-masted 800-ton Chinese ship called the Keying that has set sail on the arduous and risk-filled journey around the perilous Cape Horn. You quickly realize that you have been fooled by the King of the Crimps, Joseph 'Bunko' Kelly and forcefully drafted to work with the ships' company of 12 British and 30 Cantonese sailors. After months of living in dangerous, unhealthy, unsanitary conditions with little hope of pay, an impending storm drives the ship to seek refuge. You make eye contact with a few of your shipmates and realize now is your only chance to escape! Your Captain, Charles Alfred Kellett, is no fool and it won’t be easy, for he has rigged many obstacles. The risks are high. If caught, you face a lifetime of punishment or worse, you could be hanged!

Excellent room, but one puzzle malfunctioned for us (could be fixed to prevent for better experience). GM didn't seem concerned with puzzle issue. Theming good with good mix of puzzles and a good, logical storyline. Solid experience overall, but it didn't seem that the GMs were as bought-in as they have been other places. Definitely a good room and would return to this location in the future. I appreciate that the owner has taken time to address our review and is obviously very interested in providing a good experience for customers. Unfortunately we did not have the opportunity of working directly with the owner (we visited a few months ago), and we played only two rooms with two different GMs (both appeared to be late teens/early 20s-1 male and 1 female). The malfunctioning puzzle referenced was not a lock (though the lock discussed was a fun challenge in the room) but rather something that fell out of place without solving. We were told we could have just put it back, but we hadn't wanted to loosen it further. The GM shrugged and said that was what other people had done before. Both GMs were friendly as they completed the transactions and introduced us to the room, and they answered all questions, but it didn't go beyond that. We have had some amazing GM experiences at other locations, and we've received some great recommendations of places to try and had some fantastic room experiences. We did not have that same GM experience here, but, again, the room experience was solid. I notice that others were offered the opportunity to be handcuffed for this room. We were not offered this, so I'm not sure if this was something that was overlooked.

First and foremost, I’m so glad to hear you enjoyed Shanghaied, especially the theming, the mix of puzzles, and the storyline. We truly appreciate your thoughtful feedback on your entire experience. That said, it’s heartbreaking to hear that you felt I wasn’t as “bought-in” as others. This has been my passion for several years. I personally chose to host your three escape room experiences over the past two weekends because I genuinely wanted to make sure you had the best possible time. I sincerely apologize if I fell short of that in any way. Your feedback is something I take seriously and will reflect on to grow and improve. Regarding the puzzle you mentioned, I do want to clarify that the lock wasn’t malfunctioning but is in fact, one of the more challenging locks in Shanghaied, requiring multiple steps and several moving parts. If anyone reading this has played the room in the past, you will know that there is a challenging lock in Shanghaied that requires multiple steps to unlock with several moving parts. I do apologize if I could have made that puzzle more clear in the clues sent, but it was not malfunctioning. I will take full responsibility for how you feel about me personally, but the escape room itself was fully operational. I apologize if my clues during your game didn’t provide enough clarity to help guide you through that part more smoothly. That’s something I will work on for future guests. You and your partner did an amazing job in the room! You solved nearly every puzzle on your own and made a great team. I truly hope that when you visit again, I can provide an even better experience for you both. If you'd ever like to chat further about your experience, please feel free to reach out to us by phone or email. We’re always happy to connect and learn how we can continue improving. Thank you again for playing with us and for sharing your honest thoughts.

We enjoyed this room more than Budapest Express. I think it flowed a little better. I do recommend doing it handcuffed as it makes the experience a little different.

Me and my friends played this room and decided to be handcuffed, it definitely added on more fun having to all be stuck together. This room was on the less difficult side but it had some great puzzles that I’ve never seen in escape rooms before.

We set a record in this room, it's super quick and easy and the room directs you well. We did opt to be handcuffed and didn't end up spending time on unlocking them, which helped our time. Everything flows well and makes sense.
