98 escape rooms
A very difficult room for only two players (plus our very helpful game master), that is not completely linear, with a sometimes unclear path how to proceed. However, the theme is very straightforward and looking back it does flow cleanly from start to finish. This was one of the more challenging rooms we've played in a while. It is well built and has a few unique puzzles. It was our fourth favorite at Escapology (behind Scooby-Doo, Lost City, and Budapest Express [played at a different Escapology location]). This would have been more fun if we'd had more players with some escape room experience. However, because our game master was so attentive she made it fun and helped us escape with little time to spare.
Gameplay
Because the game is not quite linear and we were warned in our scenario about a piece of finicky equipment, we were reluctant to manipulate that piece of equipment which led to a little bit of a stuttering start. There were also a couple of times that we just weren't sure where to go next with all or none of the items we'd collected. Also, there was one puzzle that we requested a clue for that combined a number of pieces in the room that would have taken us a couple of hours to decipher and solve had our game master not intervened with a requested clue. Even knowing how to solve that puzzle it seemed like there was a significant leap from having the items to solving the puzzle. Looking back to the beginning it did flow ok, but was clearly meant to be more challenging with additional players.
Atmosphere
Everything fit the theme of the room well, to include items that were there just to add to the design.
Customer service
Shaun was outstanding! She greeted and welcomed us enthusiastically, and got us signed in and started early. Her outstanding attitude contributed to our playing three separate games back-to-back-to-back at this location. We required multiple clues during this game. When she saw we were stuck at a couple of points she asked if we wanted a clue to keep the game moving, but was willing to let us keep working if we said no. However, her interventions were both astute and timely. The majority of clues were helpful and provided just enough information to help us grasp what we were missing without spoon-feeding us the answer. She was also helpful answering questions at the end on a couple of the puzzles that we solved without fully grasping. She did an outstanding job and notably added to our having a good time playing this game!
Particularly interesting or different
No
Similar to other gangster / criminal games we've played, but it had a consistent theme and was still fun.
Story
The objectives were well established and we could see how we were tracking as we moved through the game. The story stood out a little from other similar rooms.
Difficulty
Hard
Hard, but approaching expert for only two players. Rated 9/10 seemed accurate. The flow is challenging at times, as are a few of the puzzles. Definitely not for beginners.
Game tech
Mechanical
Mostly mechanical with an excellent mix of tech. Very well designed.
Ideal number of players
6
There is a lot of work to be done in this room. We played with two experienced players with a very astute and helpful game master who kept things moving. One of the more challenging rooms we've played based on the integration of a couple of puzzles.
Scary
Spooky
It's not "not scary" in the fact that the theme is a little beyond benign, and there is a little bit of blood/gore in the design.
Minimum age
12
Not child friendly due to the blood/gore aspect. A little much for littler kids.
Was anything broken?
No
Everything worked, but we were warned about a specific lock being finicky which kept us away from it longer than we should have been. There is also another piece of tech toward that end that can be used in a couple of different ways and interaction with one piece of it was not as tight as the other pieces which resulted in our having to jimmy a piece to make it work. Operator error or equipment?: we think it may have been the way two pieces of equipment worked together since we had the right sequence but it took multiple tries to make it work.
Live actors
No
Physically active
Somewhat
There was a good amount of space in which to move around, and we found ourselves moving back and forth throughout the space.
Accessibility
There didn't seem to be any limitation on room to move, lighting, sound, or the height of puzzles.
Easy to find location
Yes
Excellent directions on the website.
Parking
Easy
Excellent directions on the website to get to the correct parking garage with a reminder to carry your ticket for up to a 2-hour validation.
