Another solid room (of the two we've played) at Red Door Escape Room Southlake. The entire game met the established objectives laid out at the beginning, and everything puzzle innovatively supported those objectives. The space was good sized with a large number of fun puzzles. We played with two "experienced" players (just under 100 game rooms played together) and rated it medium. Inexperienced players would want to add teammates due to the non-linear way the room is laid out, and the diversity of puzzles. There were a lot of hidden items in this room (with minimal red herrings) so observation is the key. A very fun and entertaining room overall. We look forward to playing more Red Door Escape Rooms as we travel to locations that have them (their website lists quite a number of cities).

Gameplay

The game play was very good and supported the pre-established objectives. However, this room is not linear and was a bit of a challenge with two players holding clues to multiple puzzles at once. A third or fourth player to work puzzles concurrently, or gatekeeper the available puzzle pieces would have been helpful. Either way, we were still able to escape with just over 1 minute remaining because the objectives were so clearly laid out.

Atmosphere

Very cool set design to support the objectives. We've seen other, similar rooms and comparatively this one was solid. There were some unique parts that added to the enjoyment. It is very well designed and executed.

Customer service

Delaney helped convince us to do this room after completing another room at Red Door and offering us a standard "next room" discount. She was very enthusiastic, and originally introduced herself as our third teammate...which she was.

Particularly interesting or different

No

Which is not to say that the game isn't good. We've seen similar themes and this was executed as well as any. An enjoyable room to play.

Story

Every part of the puzzles supported the pre-established objectives. Because the room is not linear there were times where we weren't sure which part we were working toward, but that is a function of the room being non-linear. Challenging, but well integrated.

Difficulty

Medium

With two experienced players, and due to the room being non-linear, this room leaned toward the hard side, but in the end with a little bit larger group of less experienced players or smaller group of more experienced players it still hovers around being medium. Communication and keeping puzzle pieces straight are the largest challenges based on the overall size of the space.

Game tech

Mechanical

While manipulation of the puzzles leans more mechanical, there is an extensive tech backbone making the game work. This greatly enhances the enjoyment. However, relative to games with animatronics, or ones played almost exclusively on a touch screen this room is more mechanical. Overall, the tech that supports this mechanical game is impressive.

Ideal number of players

3

We played with two but with the non-linear nature of the game we could have used a third gatekeeper (or possibly a fourth to solve puzzles in parallel). With more experienced players three seems ideal. With less experienced players the room supports more people looking at various puzzles simultaneously.

Scary

Not scary

Minimum age

8

Eight would be the minimum based on the complexity of a couple of puzzles. There is nothing questionable, but depending on the eight-year-old the puzzles may be a little too challenging in the middle of gameplay to comprehend and add value.

The space is big and, due to the non-linear flow of the game, requires extensive movement throughout the space. Additionally, unlike the universal rule of not having to reach above your head to interact with a puzzle, this breaks that paradigm. Less vertically gifted people could still work the puzzle (with good aim) but it helped to be a little taller. Another fun an innovative part of the room.

A good-sized, dedicated parking lot out in front of the facility.

I love The Gift. Any escape room that is themed as a retail shop/restaurant is my favorite, and this one has a retail shop. We did fine with 2 people, but I can see that 3-4 would have been easier because the number of puzzles. Would recommend!

It’s a chain and it shows. Fun, unique enough gameplay but some locks and rooms weren’t properly reset when we played. It’s an extensive place and nicely decorated.
