142 escape rooms
This was the second escape room our team of two had ever done, and we figured it would be too hard for us to finish but wanted to do it anyway as we were vacationing in the town. Yes, it was hard, and too dark for our middle-aged eyes, and had math in it, but in hindsight it was this room that started us on escape rooms as a hobby. First, we truly felt the owner/GM was on our side: there was no penalty for taking hints, and when we didn’t escape in time, he walked us through solving to the end so we could get the theatrical experience of the “final act”. Second, there were zero combination locks. The puzzles were varied and mostly interesting, and though we were new to them and slow, we got to feel smart in different ways. A mechanical puzzle that could have seemed childish was just a blast to complete and fun instead of tedious. Again, despite failing to solve in time, the owner/GM helped us feel we were a good team with good communication (which obviously helps build room escape enthusiasts out of newbies…) This room is clearly an intelligent labor of love and craft by its owner and I would recommend it (unless your pet peeve is dark rooms without flashlights).
