Haunt

Even though it wasn't to my tastes, Angel of Light was objectively a good experience, with superb sound and light design contributing heavily to the atmosphere. Sound played an integral role - from low booming drones that built up tension to precise sound effects that offered interesting backstories, as if something more were happening beyond the shadows. I was also impressed by the sheer number of actors and staff employed, ensuring that scares and aid were readily available in good measure.

The experience could be boiled down to 2 linear haunt mazes, a lounge with a bar, and a theatrical dance performance at the end. The mazes were enjoyable. The first one had a standout set design that transported groups to catacombs and derelict apartments. I loved its climax, where the only exit would slam shut just as you were about to reach it, enveloping you in darkness as creatures swirled about you. Thankfully, Angel of Light only allowed small groups to experience this one at a time, increasing its effectiveness. The second maze allowed guests to explore the actual theater's backstage areas, offering glimpses into dressing rooms begging to be explored but out of reach.

Personally, I found the climax to the event, which consisted of a theatrical performance, lacking. The interpretive modern dance, electric guitars, and rock drums just didn't mesh well with the rest of the experience. Even more disappointing was that we didn't meet the Angel themselves, even though the entire night was building anticipation around them.

Another factor I didn't appreciate was the lack of a comprehensible backstory or plot. One exists for sure, but it was not easy to find. After searching through the site and reading blogs after my visit, I was able to piece together the story and find out that this was supposed to tie in to a future movie!

One final thing of note: be prepared to walk and climb multiple stairs. While the warning on the site made it clear that this was not ADA Accessible, it did not mention how many stairs the guests needed to climb.

Overall, it was an enjoyable excursion that sort of fizzled at the end after its grand introduction.
