Many years ago, there was a crew of barbaric pirates led by their bold and intrepid Captain. His name was Captain Goldbeard and he spent his years voyaging the seas in the hopes of acquiring treasures beyond his wildest dreams. But one night, many moons ago, the Captain and his crew landed themselves in troubled water embarking on a quest where few others dare go, aboard an abandoned ship laden with treasure, known as ‘The Soul Catcher’. But little did he know what lay ahead… As the old pirates tale suggests, the treasures aboard The Soul Catcher were protected by a deadly sunset curse. As the story goes, there is only one rightful owner of the fortune and those who don’t succeed nor belong are to have their souls captured by the ship come sunset, holding them prisoner inside The Soul Catcher for eternity! And this was the poor fate for the Captain and his crew, who fell victim to the deadly curse and until today, not a soul has dared come near. But that means only one thing… The treasures are still up for grabs! Now if you’re here today for that very reason, to find the fortune, I must warn you of the voyage you are about to take. But the deadly sunset curse waits for no one and you only have one hour before the sun sets beyond the horizon where you will be left prisoner aboard The Soul Catcher for eternity, with no escape! Do you have what it takes to find the hidden treasure and beat the deadly sunset curse? Are you the rightful owners of the fortune or will you become the next prisoner to The Soul Catcher? Tread carefully and don’t let this adventure be your last! Time is of the essence…”

I expected this escape company (perhaps unfairly) to not be very good because it was located inside a mall, but I was very pleasantly surprised by how challenging a couple of their rooms were! They also have some very easy rooms for beginners too, which more experienced players will probably want to just skip. The set design and theming here is quite good too, although the rooms are fairly small. This particular room was rated as a 7.5/10 difficulty by this company and the two of us (experienced players) escaped with 25 minutes left on the clock. So I was a little disappointed that I didn’t get more challenge out of this room. But it would be a good difficulty level for others. If you find yourself always in want of a more challenging escape room, though, then I recommend skipping this one and going for Murder on the Orient Express or 7 Deadly Sins.
I think this company does a great job of making their game flow a little bit less obvious than other rooms, so it gives you a bit more of a sense of discovery when you do solve something or figure something out.
A pretty typical theme, but I did enjoy the puzzles nonetheless.
Medium
A mix of both.

They rated this room as a 7.5/10 difficulty and we escaped as two people with 25 minutes left on the clock. I wouldn’t play with more than 2 people unless it was a group of newbies.

There is a part that requires at least one person to crawl. Other than that, not too physical.
Crawling makes this less accessible for those with mobility difficulties.
No
It’s inside a mall, so takes a little bit of searching. It’s located on the 2nd story near the Regal movie theater.
Medium
It can take some driving around to find a parking spot on this side of the mall.

This room flowed smoothly with good tech and well-themed puzzles—we just wished there were a few more puzzles to fill the time as we got out in only 35 minutes as a team of 3 enthusiasts. Great for beginners!

Shiver me timbers! This was a fun, immersive, and very well decorated room room! This was my 34th room (29W - 5L) that I played with three other players with similar stats. I still consider myself a bit of a newbie but two of my teammates are pretty intelligent and saw solutions while I was still reading the instructions - lol. I gave the room a thumbs up, but it is pretty close to a heart. We have played three rooms at Escapology Carlsbad and this one is probably my favorite so far (with Lost City). We are going to play four more this week. The Escapology staff is super-friendly and accommodating (and funny) and the room was in great condition, very well decorated, and fun to play. I think this would be fun for a family with tween / teen kids. We had 14:07 remaining - yay!
The room was expertly decorated, everything was working, the props and puzzles were in theme with an easy flow to the room & story.
The set design was beautiful and high quality. The props and puzzles were all working and in theme. I really enjoyed this room (my fav at Escapology so far).
The Escapology employees are amazing. They are super-friendly, welcoming, accommodating, and funny. We are scheduled to play four more of their rooms this week.

I enjoyed the Pirate theme. The props were high quality which made the game play very enjoyable.
I liked the story - to be fair, I don't really listen to the details of a story, but the rest of my group does. I liked the Pirate theme though! Everything in the room was very well integrated into the theme.
Medium
Ooh, tough rating... I would rate this on the hard side of medium. One puzzle tripped us up so we had to ask for a clue. Once we received the clue, we were like, "oh, yeah, that makes sense..." I was fortunate to play with two pretty sharp kids who often saw solutions to puzzles while I was still reading instructions or messages - lol. As I mentioned above, this was my 34th room (29W - 5L) that I played with three other players with similar stats.
High tech
The room was a mix of tech and mechanical, maybe a bit more tech. I usually prefer locks & keys, but this room was definitely enjoyable.
4
We played as a group of four which felt perfect.
Not scary
The room is not scary (we don't do scary...) so I think it would be fun for families with tweens / teens.

I think the theme is fun for families with kids.

All of the puzzles and decorations were in top condition.

No live actors, thank goodness.
Somewhat
There is lots of walking around, one person might have to crawl (I can't remember if the crawling was mandatory or if our player just wanted to - lol)
The room feels large enough for a wheelchair, but there are puzzles and clues which require vision, color, and auditory abilities.
Yes
It is in a mall.
Easy
There is lots of mall parking.

Perfect game for beginner to moderates! I took my aunt, uncle and niece for their first times and we all were super into it. It’s a great blend of puzzles that are just hard enough with impressive set design. Escapology always does a great job.
The staff was great! Very welcoming very nice.

One of the better games I’ve played from Escapeology. Up there with the Scooby Doo adventure. Ambiance was on point and the flow was great and all puzzles made sense. Just like their “Lost City” at this location, it’s very easy for experienced players so I’d play them both to get the equivalent experience of a traditional 1hr experience.
