In 1925 our city of Statesville had a devastating fire that nearly leveled three city blocks. The fire was started when the hidden still at Key and Co exploded after being left unattended. The owner of the still had been nabbed by police and no one was able to find the hidden valve key to release the pressure from the still in time to save our city. Your escape room adventure entertainment begins as your team is selected to travel back in time to prevent the explosion. We have built a time portal machine and have the opportunity to send your team back in time for only one hour to try to save the still and our city from ruin. The pressure is on as you race the clock. Many surprises await. As with many of our escape games, there are special effects used. Some physical agility is required for this room. If you have mobility issues, please call our staff before booking. If you have a medical condition that would be impacted by strobes or fog effects, please call to discuss with our team - some accommodations can be made with advanced notice.

The theming of this room was very well done and immersive! That being said, there were a couple of shortcomings in this room in regards to gameplay. There are so many puzzles in this room and when you combine that with a couple of red herrings in the room, it’s not always intuitive what you should be working on at what time. This room has so many things to do that I would typically just recommend going with a larger group BUT this room felt small with just a three person group. It feels as if you have to choose between an ideal number of participants to solve puzzles and an ideal number of participants to navigate the space. Additionally, multiple parts of this room malfunctioned as we tried to solve puzzles which ultimately kept us from finishing the room (in my opinion). Overall, I would recommend the room if you want to experience a well-themed room and support an owner who is very kind and clearly passionate about his business but in the spirit of full transparency, this is not the most fulfilling experience in regards to gameplay.

Gameplay

Some of the puzzles were enjoyable while others were more frustrating. There were some red herrings in this room which is not something that I’m a huge fan of. We were held up by some locks that didn’t appear to have any real connection to the numbers/keys unlocking them. We also encountered a couple of elements that didn’t work as intended.

Atmosphere

Very cute room design that was effective and immersive!

Customer service

Everyone at this location was very kind and the owner is particularly enthusiastic about his projects!

Particularly interesting or different

Maybe? I’ve seen similar decade themes in escape rooms but the storyline was different for this one. That being said, the storyline doesn’t factor into the gameplay very much.

Story

The story was unique and related to the location of “Key to Escape”. I think that the storyline could have landed more if there was a well-designed introductory video and/or audio as opposed to a spoken introduction by the game master. Also, it would have been nice for the storyline to factor into gameplay more.

Difficulty

Hard

It’s not that the individual puzzles were extremely difficult but there were just so many of them! Additionally, it wasn’t fully intuitive what to work on at each point in the game.

Game tech

There were some physical locks and some technical elements.

Ideal number of players

4

This is a bit of a tricky recommendation to make because spaces are pretty small and could only comfortably accommodate about 4 people BUT there are so many puzzles that I would recommend 6 people.

Scary

Not scary

Minimum age

12

The other rooms at this location would be more entertaining for younger players.

Was anything broken?

Yes

There was one puzzle that we had the right idea for that we had to try to execute 4+ times before it worked. Another technical element in the room did not work which impaired our ability to see a clue that was imperative to getting a code.

Live actors

No

Physically active

Somewhat

You must walk up stairs to enter this room and there are more stairs/small spaces within the game.

Accessibility

I would not recommend this game for people with mobility restrictions. Some puzzles utilize color and some puzzles require listening.

Wow. Amazing room. The storyline and theme of this room was fantastic. It was just my wife and I and we were not at the top of our game and almost escaped. We struggled with a few of the puzzles and needed quite a few nudges. Even though we didnt escape we loved this room. The sound system in this room really amped up the "under pressure" theme. There were a few unique elements that we had not seen elsewhere that really added to the fun. The use of technology, storytelling and artistry in this room and all the rooms at Key To Escape is as good as it gets. You must stop at Key To Escape if you are near the Stateville NC area or just looking for some great rooms. Roger the owner was very hospitable and we enjoyed talking about escape rooms, tech and various other topics. Matt, our GM did a great job with storytelling for the room and nudges.

Of the two rooms we played at Key to Escape, Under Pressure was by far the more puzzle-dense one. There was a lot to do even for our group of 5, and we needed more then a few hints to get all the way through. The decor was simple but well done, and the setup of the room was actually super interesting - being built into a historical building, it really felt like we were exploring a long forgotten speakeasy. Key to Escape is a wonderful venue in a super unique building on the outskirts of Charlotte, and I’d recommend enthusiasts come up to visit if you can!

Amazing room. The owner and GM were fantastic. This is one of the better rooms I’ve ever done. From the ownership, to the creativity and overall flow of the puzzles, I cannot recommend this place enough

Under Pressure was nicely themed, with a tie to the town's local history, but the time travel framing device seemed completely unnecessary-- we've been in plenty of rooms where BAM, you're in an Egyptian tomb or a submarine. Why muddy the water here? Just set the scene in the opening narrative, put us in the speakeasy, and we're good to go. There are a couple of items that are well-hidden, so your search skills had best be on point. I enjoyed the creative use of their very limited space (the room is in an old church). We had a few minor issues with the room, but overall we enjoyed it and would recommend it.

Gameplay

This room relied on quite a few arbitrarily-locked containers, which may turn some people off. There were also times when you received objects that you couldn't yet use. This can be fine-- there is one kind of object in this room that you quickly realize you'll be accumulating a certain number of-- but I dislike being given an object that I can make no immediate use or sense of. When I get something during gameplay, I expect that it's being given to me at that moment for a reason.

Atmosphere

The puzzles are mostly low-tech, which felt appropriate for the speakeasy theme-- a theme reinforced by the time-worn objects in the room (including a ticker-tape machine used to communicate hints, which was nifty).

Customer service

The staff were great-- very welcoming, accommodating, and enthusiastic.

Particularly interesting or different

No

Story

The story was mostly backstory-- some nice history about the area that inspired the room. Once in the room, there's not really any narrative to speak of.

Roger. Roger. Roger. The owner Roger, is a treasure of a man. We had a great time chatting with him about his room and the history of Statesville. Beyond being one of the coolest buildings I’ve ever played an escape room in (and old church, what?!) the room is so well thought out and ties in the history of the town. Every element of the room is intentional to bring you into the world of that room, including how you get your hints. We had the best time here and did not want to leave. If you are triggered by heat, you may struggle with one of the rooms. If you get overwhelmed by music or a soundtrack playing, you may also struggle. If you love a good dance break, we found ourselves dancing multiple times in the room. You need to be able to climb stairs to enter the room. Once in the room, at least one player will need to be able to climb narrow stairs.
