Nov 1917 The First World War is raging in Belgium. Belgium is largely occupied territory. Only in the Westhoek, especially on the Yser, did the soldiers manage to hold their ground. The Belgian army mainly aspired to a defensive approach. This was not to the liking of some brave soldiers who wanted more action to defend their homeland. Therefore, some soldiers formed a select group and deliberately sought information from the opponents, sought prisoners of war and carried out specific attack actions to serve their country. The Patrols were born. Despite their headstrong approach that also endangered their own lives, they achieved many successes and could count on the support of the army commanders and their corps mates. Bitten by the heroism of these soldiers, you decide to join the Patrols. Your mission seems very clear: to blow up a machine gun nest of the opposition. Can you locate the exact position of the machine-gun nest of the opposition? Will you make it through No Man's Land in one piece? Can you gain sufficient knowledge about the explosives to be used? In short: can you combine good cooperation and courage so that this attack attempt is Patrol worthy?

The room was definitely enjoyable! World War I is an interesting and rarely used theme, which already caught my attention beforehand. The set design was well done and nicely established the setting. The puzzles were fairly simple and could mostly be solved in parallel. Waiting for each other did not feel like a deliberate team choice, but rather a necessity. Without doing so, some players would have missed large parts of the room, as it was possible to progress quite far on your own. However, I felt that much more could have been done with this room. The decor is strong and helps create immersion, but at the same time it felt like something was missing. A fitting soundtrack alone could have added a lot. I also really missed a sense of danger. You are sneaking into an enemy trench, yet throughout the game it felt like you were completely alone and free to do whatever you wanted. An actor or clearer consequences for mistakes could have added that sense of threat and elevated the room to a much higher level. Another thing I noticed was that the room did not really feel like it was built by true escape room enthusiasts. Our game host did not seem interested in a debrief afterward. No photo was taken, and once we arrived, we were quickly sent into the room. After finishing, we were just as quickly back outside. This was quite disappointing, as these moments usually add a lot to the overall experience.

With three, we could work parallel but waited on each other att all times. Otherwise lots of the room would be missed by other players.

Although this has one TERPECA nomination, it isn't talked about as much as some of Belgium's bigger and flashier games. I think that's a shame. The set isn't massive but it's great fun to explore, and it's beautifully designed and suits the theme. The puzzles were solid and I appreciated them even more when I learned that the owner had based some of them on actual codes used in WWI. All in all, I think this is well worth playing.

Our GM was the owner/designer. He took time afterwards to talk us through the historical inspirations for the game, which added a great deal to the experience.

This is the only WWI-themed room I've played.

Scary

Not scary

No horror elements. As is appropriate for a game set in war, the soundtrack featured some gunfire and there was a very faint suggestion of gore.
