373 escape rooms
This game is simultaneously dripping with charm... and infuriating. There's a remarkable unique puzzle halfway through that I'd love every escaper to see and some silly searching and logic puzzles that hint toward a relatively easy room with time to play around in this fun world. However, there is a huge ramping up of difficulty at the end which was not foreshadowed by anything prior - some really good puzzles that were nonetheless finicky in their execution, occasionally obtuse in their clue-ing and demanding of some real brain power. We had so much back-and-forth with the GM in the last room that ultimately he threw open the door to walk us through the final puzzle in person (his explanations weren't "coming through" and he was visibly annoyed by our inability to understand the puzzles in the way he intended). Not the best way to remember an otherwise really great game (unfortunate, but, I assume, it was mostly our own fault...). We did point out a few tweaks which could have made things clearer and prevented the frustration altogether, but the owner seemed to take offense (and got visibly angry at us), which was not our intention. Escape rooms must be like children to designers and it's hard to give and take critques, but some beta testing and openness to feedback for both of these rooms would be really valuable. I'd love to come back for his future games, and I'd recommend these if you have a week in Montreal.
Gameplay
Unfortunately, there was a huge unexpected jump in difficult, which interrupted the flow and brought the otherwise silly fun to a standstill.
Atmosphere
Really great design. Loved the attention to details and light-heartedness of everything.
Customer service
The GM / owner has a passion for the games, and he was welcoming and supportive during our first game, and we had no problem that we had to skip a puzzle due to tech issues. In this game, however, he did not take kindly to how we approached the solutions to the puzzles, getting obviously upset with us as we tried to understand his explanations. They didn't quite click for us, and that's OK. I wish him the best and look forward to his next games.
Particularly interesting or different
Yes
A unique puzzle, clever world and a huge ramp-up in difficulty. TIP: attack the first part of the game quickly.
