The Keeper And The Fungus Among UsHeadlock Escape Rooms OnlineEscape roomVirtual Having the chance to play ‘The Keeper and the Fungus Among Us’ before it ends later this month was a real treat. The music, the seamless cutscenes that blended perfectly with the live moments, and the humor throughout made it a standout online escape game that truly deserves the accolades it has received over the past few years. While it’s sad to see the game go (for now), it’s reassuring to hear that Joel plans to preserve it in some form for posterity. What excites me most is how the game maximizes the remote nature of the experience and utilizes mechanics and charm that would be impossible in an in-person escape room. I hope more games like this will emerge to continue the artistry of online escape games.
Rise of the FungiHeadlock Escape Rooms OnlineEscape roomVirtual It’s an escape room, it’s a video game, it’s a musical — it’s a delight. ‘Rise of the Fungi’ builds upon the world of ‘The Keeper and the Fungus Among Us’ by offering a glimpse into Paxillus’s villain origin story. Loaded with funky music, delightful JRPG-esque aesthetics, mechanics, and puzzles, the game shines as a showcase of all the wonderful things an escape room specifically designed for an online platform can achieve. I feel incredibly fortunate to have played both fungi games. The awards are well deserved.
Hallows HillWolf Escape Games-OnlineEscape roomVirtual A thoughtfully made virtual escape room that quite honestly tops the list I’ve played to date. The narrative was delivered seamlessly throughout ‘Hallows Hill’, with little reading feeling superfluous to the overarching experience. The aesthetics were tasteful and exciting — the faded, worn and weary media contained across the house looked great and made me long for a real, tangible experience that rivals the design of Hallows Hill. Thematically, ‘Hallows Hill’ employs ample spiritualism and haunted house tropes and props to firmly place the players into a familiar supernatural world, with the story similarly staying within that realm’s tried-and-true formula. A few twists unfurl along the way, which I’d love to see translated onto a big screen production for a rather refreshing take on contacting the dead.
The Triwizard TrialsImprobable Escapes - OnlineEscape roomVirtual ‘The Triwizard Trials’ was one of my first hosted online games, and it was a delight. The puzzles were straightforward and enjoyable without requiring any hinting to solve. The immersive environment and props looked great. An online resource system underpinned the experience, and it worked well to include everyone whilst focusing on the essential props in the room.
Seven Dwarfs: Mining MissionImprobable Escapes - OnlineEscape roomVirtual This was my second online hosted room with Improbable Escapes. The aesthetics were impressive, the puzzles fun and the host welcoming. Their online system for experiencing the game works wonderfully and gets you as close to being in the rooms as possible. I can’t wait to play their next room remotely!
Miami BayWolf Escape Games-OnlineEscape roomVirtual Wolf Escape Games charter a nostalgic trip to 1980s sunny Miami, Florida in ‘Miami Bay’. Players take on the role of police officers investigating high stakes criminal activity over four riveting chapters. With glimmering visuals and an intuitive interface that captures the charming interface of point-and-click games gone by, ‘Miami Bay’ oozes saturated ‘80s nostalgia. The storyline is pinned together with hilarious tongue-in-cheek dialogue that pokes fun at the media and bravado of that time. While some of the puzzles felt less connected to the storyline, or not as clearly clued, the overall experience is ambitious and it does pay off. With a new Wolf Escape game on the way, we’re looking forward to the bright future of virtual escape rooms. For now, it’s time to go back and play some Nancy Drew point-and-click mysteries 🔍
The Undersea OverthrowImprobable Escapes - OnlineEscape roomVirtual A cool theme with great props and puzzles. I always leave Improbable Escape’s online experiences itching to board a play to Canada just so I can physically be there to play their rooms. They’re so fun!
Neverland: Heist On The High SeasImprobable Escapes - OnlineEscape roomVirtual A fun online experience with immersive sets and a busy collection of puzzles that ensures you utilise almost all of your time as you navigate your way through a Peter Pan-themed heist! This was one of our favourite online escape games from Improbable Escapes. We just want to visit in person and play their games!
Mysterious Map HeistSociety Of CuriositiesEscape roomVirtual An interesting digital game of sleuthing that blurs the line between the game and the digital footprint of the real-life locations that ‘Mysterious Map Heist’ is inserted into. Society of Curiosities employed some interesting mechanics that I haven’t seen in online escape room experiences previously, some of which were quite impressive! Looking forward to playing their other games that feature tangible props and artefacts.
The Cure For The Common ZombieImprobable Escapes - OnlineEscape roomVirtual This was my third online game with Improbable Escapes and it was a delight! The rooms look incredible, and the wide range of puzzles make for such an enjoyable experience. They offer images of the props and a map for each room so that it’s easy for all members of the group can interact with the puzzles. We can’t wait to play our next room with Improbable Escapes!
