The Forest of Fables
CU Adventures in Time and Space
Escape room
IRL
Wowza! Some games have wow moments. The Forest of Fables has wowza moments! This game is a phenomenal example of storytelling through an escape room. Once upon a time, your adventure is narrated by your GM, a live actor who tells your tale with enthusiasm and elegance. I won’t spoil what happens, but I was blown away by the story progression, the magic I witnessed, and the surprises in store. I love fantasy fairy tales, and this room writes the book on how to achieve the genre in escape rooms! The time limit is 75 minutes to account for the real-time narrator, but veteran escape artists will likely get through it much quicker. I adored this room so much, and I’d love to say much more, but you have to see it for yourself! The Forest of Fables flips the script on what escape rooms can do, and I am so much happily ever after for experiencing it!
Game Night
CU Adventures in Time and Space
Escape room
IRL
Game Night rolls high in +amazing set design, +immersive worlds set in the realms of tabletop RPGs, and +clever puzzle quests that replicate the thrill of encountering dungeons and dragons! This escape room is not only one of my favorites at CU Adventures, but easily one of the best games I’ve ever played. From the moment you walk in, it’s a nostalgia dream that eventually becomes a grand fantasy with an epic finale. Our wonderful GM Nicole was also our splendid DM (dungeon master). As an in-game live actor, she perfectly inhabited the roles that such a DM might personify. A group of 4+ is required and also recommended for the puzzles and the full experience. Most enthusiasts should have no issue, and the fun is honestly the journey with your party. This room is worth traveling to IL for, along with the other amazing games CU has available. Game Night easily gets a Nat 20 on my dice!

Calling All Villains
CU Adventures in Time and Space
Escape room
IRL
Villain reporting for duty! CU Adventures is one of my favorite escape room venues in the US, and this room lives up to their awesomeness! The set design in the 1st room is superb, with neat areas to explore. The tech in the room is great, too. The area for the entire experience is huge, and almost demands lots of people, though our team of 2 were able to get through with some time to spare thanks to our amazing GM! The room makes excellent use of superpowers and tasking you to make use of them in an immersive Batman-like setting. There were parts where we definitely wouldn’t have found things or understood some logic without help from creative allies. And I don’t think this is as amazing as their other offerings, though that probably says more about the quality of their rooms as a whole. If you like comic book heroes, this is one of the best we’ve done for that genre. As a fan of Marvel, DC, and My Hero Academia, we were more than ready to answer the Bat signal and save the day, or perhaps, cause a little villainous mischief!
The Boogeyman
Gatlin's Escape Games - Pigeon Forge
Escape room
IRL
Astounding room in every way! The whole room gave me flashbacks to being a scared little kid exploring the scary side of my imagination. The room itself is spooky with some jump startles, it’s more of a whimsical horror like Tim Burton or kids’ horror shows. The twisted nostalgia is exactly my vibe. The puzzles were great, not too challenging, maybe a little too focused on searching for things, with a little bit of annoying guess and check in the dark. The whole experience is a fun adventure with an epic finale, which I enjoyed every minute of. The intro even included a bedtime story from the wonderful GM! Highly recommended that you stay up past your bedtime to live out this fantastic nightmare! Just remember to clean your room… OR ELSE!
Big Maw Bertha's Fussin' & A' Feudin' Moonshine Hill Hootenanny
Gatlin's Escape Games - Downtown Gatlinburg
Escape room
IRL
Yeeeehawwwww! This here hootenanny was a hoot and a half! I lurved ev’ry stinkin’ moment! It was fun, funny, and had so much good ol’fashioned care put into it! Made me har har and haw haw! Big Maw’s got lotsa tech surprisingly, and it all werks like butter! It’s such a Gatling must-play room right on yonder here. So get yer critters in a bunch, and get in on that moonshine, yeeeehawwwwwww!
The Haunting Of Hyde House
Gatlin's Escape Games - Downtown Gatlinburg
Escape room
IRL
A very creepy fun room! It’s creepy in a wholesome innocent way, so don’t worry if you think it might be super scary. We’re scaredy cats and had no issues with the few mild jump scares. The story is strangely sweet albeit sad. I loved all the twists and turns, and the locks and puzzles were super thematic and clever. I highly recommend playing with Isabella! She’s a great friend!
Curse Of The Kraken’s Eye
Gatlin's Escape Games - Downtown Gatlinburg
Escape room
IRL
A shack with an escape room in a big tourist town may seem unassuming, but don’t be fooled. This room is super immersive from the moment you enter until the moment you leave. I had to double check that we were in an escape shack in Gatlinburg! Great clever puzzles, with none of them using traditional locks. Excellent use of unique team skills. And a set and soundtrack that made us feel like we were in a Pirates movie, savvy! I highly recommend this and the other rooms at Gatlin’s! Release the Kraken!
Masters Of Magic
Gatlin's Escape Games - The Village
Escape room
IRL
Masterful and magical! Loved all the technology and props. It’s one of those magician rooms that actually felt magical, like we were part of the act! There was one puzzle that was so worn out though that it made it and a corresponding puzzle very hard to solve without guess and check. Other than that, we loved all the tricks and our GM was fun too! Do note that there are mandatory stairs that you will climb. Abracazabra!
Ghost Town
Countdown Games
Escape room
IRL
Yeehaw! This Ghost Town is Countdown Games’ newest game, and it’s a hoot and a holler! Great puzzles, masterful contraptions, and an epic finale to boot. I was very blown away by the ending. We beat it as a team of 2, but it’s definitely rough with the sheer amount of puzzles. Still a great time and one of the Best Western rooms I’ve been to. Made me wanna go YEEEHAWWWW!
The Mezzanine
Decode Detroit - Ann Arbor
Escape room
IRL
The Mezzanine is not your typical experience, much like the other escape rooms at this company. Instead of having to solve a series of puzzles to escape, the room basically throws everything and the kitchen sink at you in terms of puzzles. You don’t have to solve every puzzle. The room just kind of pushes you from room to room. The puzzles are great, though as I have realized from this location, skew towards logic and math. They’re some of my favorite kinds of puzzles, but if you weren’t good at those or just plain don’t like it, this isn’t for you. Also, some puzzles are insanely difficult. But of course, many of them are optional. Luckily, you kind of just get to choose your items and the game will lead the way for you. We literally got completely confused during one of the major rooms and ignored the main puzzle until the very end. Part of it was that we had no idea what was going on, but we were still able to finish. But that example is proof positive that you can bumble your way through the room and escape. There are even more bonus puzzles if that strikes your fancy, but you will have to be outside for those so plan accordingly for weather. This is a superb company to just bring a big group and puzz out! Just have fun and don’t get lost!
