Agatha Christie's Murder On The Orient Express
Escapology - Northridge
Escape room
IRL
So unfortunately this room was marred by a lack of proper reset from the crew here. Trains are a good spot for an escape room to take place so my group was excited going in. However, the first puzzle took us 15 minutes and that does not happen to us - we are experienced players and knew we had spent an abnormal amount of time on one puzzle. We were prompted with a clue (another pet peeve of ours; don’t give us a clue unless we ask for one) and made it to the next room. There we find pieces of the overarching puzzle and a paper we realized WOULD’VE helped us in the first room. Essentially two papers had swapped places and we looked stupid just because we didn’t have the information that would’ve helped us in the first place. We hate being the people to complain too, but even after the game bringing it up to the GM seemed moot as they brushed it off with a half-hearted ‘sorry’ and led us on our way. The experience wasn’t terrible but for our second Escapology room, they started to feel formulaic and detached compared to the ground-up escape rooms feel.
Alice In Wonderland
60Out - Melrose
Escape room
IRL
I did this Alice in Wonderland themed room with 2 friends of mine who had never done an escape room. When it comes to theming, I think 60Out always does it well, no matter the room. However when they step into the fantasy realm, the construction and props can feel a little cheap. The most memorable puzzle from the first room included knocking on doors and though my group took a bit longer to grasp the concept, all puzzles made sense once we were through. The second half of the room felt way more on theme and grandiose. The technology used ensured the gameplay didn’t get stale at any time. Though one piece of equipment was a little finicky, it did work and we didn’t need any outside help.

Alice [VR]
60Out - Melrose
Escape room
IRL
Another straightforward VR game, I think Arvi, the company who makes these games, are great when it comes to integrating plot into their games. The original Alice in Wonderland story is toyed with but not to unrecognizability. Lots of fun pieces you get to work with though the only downside is the easy, A-to-B puzzles.
Amityville
60Out - Silver Lake
Escape room
IRL
This was an okay escape room. It gives you everything you want from a scary escape room except real “scares”. It is creepy but that’s about as far as it goes. The puzzles were abundant but mostly simple. And it seemed most of the time, even after we had tried the correct answer multiple times, certain doors weren’t triggering and had to be triggered manually. Cool hiding spots for keys made finding everything a lot of fun as well as being handed two small candles at the beginning as our light source.
Area 51
Maze Rooms - Robertson Blvd
Escape room
IRL
The biggest downside here was one of the puzzles just didn’t work after we solved it, and at the time everything had gone smoothly up til then. The overall experience was great, with fun puzzles and enthralling set. One puzzle utilized a camera in a new way I’d never seen and the ending was memorable.
Avalanche
Maze Rooms - Robertson Blvd
Escape room
IRL
Avalanche is an unassuming treasure trove when it comes to set design. The five rooms span the entire story, which is probably the weakest aspect of the game. The room is clean and the puzzles are inventive, using redirection and playing with players’ expectations for solving. Every door opened to a new, intriguing spot within the realm of the isolated setting, sadly becoming loosely tethered to the original plot at times. Overall a very satisfying room to explore and solve. Me and my two friends succeeded with just 3 hints and had a wonderful experience.
Bonnie and Clyde's Great Getaway
Architect Escape Rooms
Escape room
IRL
Though all of Architect Escape Rooms feel same-y in one way or another, they’re all fun rooms. It’s like the Green Album by Weezer: though every song sounds kinda the same, that’s what gives the album its style and panache. Bonnie and Clyde, though the last escape room we did at this location, was probably our favorite. There were two really cool puzzles attached to the room that elevated it above the rest. Architect always manage to surprise with little details and I hope there will be more in the future.
Casino Heist
60Out - West LA
Escape room
IRL
The first room does most of the heavy lifting in Casino Heist. Though the two rooms at this location are the oldest in the franchise, Casino Heist shows it’s age. The first room has all the casino in it and the latter two still look like a basement. With machines that don’t work strewn about the “back room” it feels kind of thrown together on the back end. Some puzzles are intriguing and with real gambling tables in the main room, the game has charm to it. However for my group, it was a very easy room. Good intro room for any group.
Casino Heist II
60Out - HHLA
Escape room
IRL
Though they brought over a lot of similar elements from the first version of this room, it was altered enough that it felt new and different. They had great ideas for puzzles that I’m glad they kept in the first room, and everything they added felt fresh and welcome. The only downside were some of the combination locks were very hard to open, but the GM said they were fixing that soon.
Christmas [VR]
60Out - Melrose
Escape room
IRL
It’s a Christmas VR escape rooms and that’s what you get. Not too much, not too little.
