Escobar: Part 1 (The Betrayal)
The Escape Revolution
Escape room
IRL
We loved our experience at Wrongfully Committed so much that we immediately booked the other two rooms for the next day. Escobar was the first escape room we’ve done where we felt that the GM was actually what made the room most memorable. The room itself was really cool (high production value, unique puzzles, and immersive environment), but our GM Stan was freakin’ amazing. It was clear that he got a kick out of watching us play the game. He was so observant, it felt like he understood how we worked and was present in the room with us. He cheered us on, joked with us over the intercom, and really just added to the experience. Best GM ever!

We had one night in Hamilton before our flight out and we decided to book an escape room at the last minute. It ended up being the best decision we made all trip. Heist ended up being one of our favorite rooms of all time. The premise of the room is a bit different from most rooms. You’re not trying to escape. Instead, you’re trying to solve as many puzzles as possible to get as much money as possible before time is up. And boy are there a lot of puzzles! This is perfect for a slightly larger group that enjoys dividing and conquering nonlinear rooms. We were the last group before they closed for the night and we had such a great time that the staff was kind enough to let us play for another hour after closing. We loved it so much that we talk about planning a trip back to New Zealand just to go back and play more of their rooms.

This is hands down one of our favorite rooms ever. Unlike other escape rooms where it’s often obvious what puzzles need to be solved and text/picture clues are sometimes provided on how to solve them, this room makes you feel like you really were plopped into a jail cell. Nothing is obvious and that’s the beauty of it. We were so immersed in the story that we didn’t even know we’d escaped when we did. We were still expecting our getaway driver to come get us. I even accidentally grabbed the tip box off the wall thinking that we would need it. Highly, highly recommend!

The cameras were broken so a GM stayed in the room with us, which we didn’t mind at all. But then the GM had to call to manually trigger multiple mechanisms that didn’t work. On top of that, props that were supposed to be locked up weren’t and props that weren’t were, causing the game to feel disjointed. Even though the GM was in the room with us and could’ve quickly caught on when something was not set up right, he wasn’t very attentive and we had to flag him down multiple times to check if we were doing something wrong or if something was broken again. We left the game feeling very frustrated. The puzzles themselves could’ve been fun and the room could’ve been immersive if not for all the technical difficulties we experienced.

Optimistically tried this room with 3 people (1 native Chinese speaker, 1 American born Chinese speaker with limited reading skills, and 1 non-Chinese speaker), but unfortunately there was just too much reading in Chinese for us to complete the room in time. The puzzles themselves weren’t too difficult and the concept was fun. 3 people was definitely enough for the room, but if just one more of us read Chinese competently, we would’ve made it. Maybe not the room for foreigners with limited Chinese, but still a fun room for natives!
