The WillowsJust Fix It ProductionsHauntOther It is good to come home. 2023 marks the 2nd year I've attended the Willows, and it remains one of my favorite immersive experiences to date. From the moment you ring the doorbell, you are whisked away into a dreamlike world where the night slowly slips into an ominous chaotic thrill. Interaction is highly encouraged, and curiosity is rewarded. The actors put forth strong performances and are willing to part with insightful dialogue to those who are brave enough to ask. Partway in the night, guests are taken along branching paths, making return trips satisfying. During my second visit, I was shown a completely different storyline and participated in activities I did not know existed on my first visit. I do not want to divulge any further - this is one of those "the less you know, the better" scenarios. If you can snag a ticket (which is extremely difficult to come by) and love immersive theater, then make your way to The Willows before it is too late.
Fangs!FangsHauntOther Fangs! is an excellent immersive theater adventure that offers strong performances, story, and atmosphere, with plenty of opportunities to have a 1-1 experience. The setting alone, the Mountain View Mausoleum, perfectly sets the tone as guests creep through the dark marbled halls with nothing but a dimly lit lantern guiding them. Kudos to the staff and actors for perfectly navigating the labyrinthine corridors. There's nothing like hearing a distant scream echo from unseen chambers while surrounded by tombs. Performances remained strong throughout the night with energy and enthusiasm. It was great to see audience members start to build bonds with certain characters, making them all the more invested in the story. While I wasn't chosen for a 1-1 this year, I found multiple lucky participants plucked from their groups to go on a solo journey with another character. The engrossing plot had perfect pacing. The mystery and tension steadily built up as the night progressed, culminating in an exciting turning point and climax. Backstories are slowly revealed, uncovering deeply buried motivations and explanations. It is worth sticking around afterward to talk with other guests to fill in plot details, as one will not get the full story on their first runthrough. For those wishing to attend, expect to spend most time on your feet, as you will need to walk and climb stairs to reach different scenes. Those with mobility issues may find this experience difficult. Fangs! was a real treat this Halloween season - make sure to take a bite out of this morsel before it disappears.
Haunted Soiree: A Macabre Cocktail Party - Théâtre du VaurienHouse of SpiritsHauntOther The Haunted Soiree offered a wonderful mix of activities that can suit just about any adult crowd. For those looking to indulge in creative cocktails while taking a laid-back approach will enjoy the handful of beverage choices available. For those looking to dive deeper into the story, there are plenty of characters to interact with, as well as a few fun challenges. Entertainment is plentiful, all backed with wonderful lighting and atmosphere. One major drawback however is the large crowd, which diminishes the experience. Hallways and rooms are flooded, increasing wait times for some of the experiences (especially the restroom). Unfortunately, this is made worse by rowdy audience members, some of which behave immaturely and destroy the immersive mood. This is not to take away from the amazing talent, though. Kudos to the actors, performers, and staff. Performances were strong and repeated throughout the night, giving everyone a chance to view it. Characters told wonderful stories to those brace enough to ask. Overall, The Haunted Soiree was a wonderful and entertaining adventure and was one of the best offerings the spooky season has to offer.
