Election DayAppleseed AvenueEscape roomOther This is what escape rooms are all about - a game that made me fall in love with the medium all over again. An incredibly detailed neighborhood made up of distinctly beautiful spaces, intuitive onboarding, clever and logical problem solving, and one-of-a-kind character interactions, which were ALL in service of hilarious, dramatic, and unforgettable storytelling. I can’t stop thinking about this game. If you want to experience some of the most immersive gameplay and storytelling in the area, swing by Appleseed Avenue and register to vote before Election Day. What could go wrong?
Downtown Disney Whisk'd QuestRabbit Hole Quest CraftEscape roomOther An enjoyable series of puzzles at different locations across the Downtown Disney District and surrounding area, all building to a meta puzzle which unlocks your treasure. You can solve at your own pace, all on foot. You might expect the game to take 1-2 hours to complete. Everything you need to solve the puzzles is contained in one lanyard that you can throw around your neck or toss in a bag. No park admission required for this one! The puzzles were mostly enjoyable, but we much preferred the Disneyland Time Quest game from this company. We were a little frustrated that one puzzle is completely self-contained and did not require us to actually be present in Downtown Disney. We were also a tad thrown off by a bit more walking than anticipated (you’ll discover why). All-in-all, it’s a nice introduction to what this company has to offer if you want to start with a game that doesn’t require a park ticket. Parking can still be tough or expensive, but the experience could easily be paired with a fun meal at Downtown Disney or played after a day in the parks.
Big Top BlastIt's a BlastEscape roomOther A point earning experience with a pipeline layout where you spend a predetermined amount of time playing arcade-style games (physical, skill, memory, and communication based tasks) in each space before moving on to the next. Most of the games and tasks were enjoyable to learn and play, though some felt a bit tedious after a long time doing them. We weren’t quite sure what our point totals really meant after each space, but we still enjoyed playing through the games and didn’t focus all of our energy on a high score. There was a storyline throughout the experience as well, and the environment of the last space in particular helped bring that story to life, but we were left wanting more from the decor in the other spaces. While we aren’t sure it was used by any means, it at least felt like or seemed like AI may have been used to assist the animation and voiceover during the cutscenes, which took us out of the experience just a bit. If it wasn’t used, a bit more attention to detail in both of those aspects would have made those cutscenes more engaging to us. They are onto something with the unique concept of this new type of experience, with a fun collection of games and tasks that progressively get more difficult, and with a little more detail put into the environment and story, this game could stand out even more.
