You have just received “The Shelley Volumes,” a collection of hollowed-out books left by Mary Shelley (author of Frankenstein) to her son, Florence. In the first volume, you find a message from Mary: "Contained within these volumes is a secret many great men have devoted their entire lives to unearthing, and always in vain. It is a secret I would have taken with me to the grave, except that it is, in more ways than one, our family’s legacy, and thus rightfully belongs with you..." Beneath Mary’s letter you’ll discover a treasure trove of gorgeous hand-written documents, 2D and 3D jigsaw puzzles, mysterious objects and artifacts, and devious challenges. Prove your worth by studying the documents, constructing the jigsaws, and solving the puzzles... and you’ll be treated to a heartbreaking story that culminates in a shocking reimagining of the truth behind Mary Shelley’s famous novel. VOLUME 1 Volume 1 concerns Mary's teenage years. We learn about her education by her iconoclastic father and complete three assignments on the subjects she most loved as a student—poetry, music, and astronomy—each of which is presented in the form of a puzzle. Simultaneously, Mary embarks on a love affair with the dashing (but married) poet Percy Shelley. The course of their courtship is laid out over 15 love letters—complete with original poetry, gorgeous drawings, and some heavy flirting—but be warned, in Mother of Frankenstein, there are always secrets hidden in the spaces between the words, for those who know how to look...

Mother of Frankenstein is a full escape-like game from Hatch Escapes, best known for their amazing escape room Lab Rat. This game is very beautifully narrative-driven and based on the real life of Frankenstein creator Mary Shelley. The narrative and puzzles go hand in hand and culminate in a genius final puzzle. I thought the puzzles were very varied and catered to different intelligence strengths. Unfortunately, I was weak in one of them, and since the puzzles were very long and drawn out, I couldn’t really enjoy 1/4 of the entire game. I think my main issue was how long each puzzle was. I’m better with shorter puzzles usually found in escape rooms, whereas this game had me interacting with a singular type of puzzle for at least 1 hour each. This game is part of a bigger story with two more volumes already out, and the ending of this one made me very intrigued to play the next installment. Perhaps my opinions will fluctuate after I complete volumes 2 and 3. Then my complete review will be alive. IT’S ALIIIIVE!

an original concept to a puzzle game. an interesting concept for a puzzle system and creative execution for the main puzzle of the volume. the scale of it made it feel more grand than other experiences. i also enjoyed finding the subtlety of the puzzles and quality of the game as a whole. this is also the first of three. so i would suggest to play if you planned to continue with the narrative

Solid story driven puzzle board game. Good if you like reading. Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 are better than Vol. 3. Ran into a bit of frustration in the manual execution of Vol. 3 that took away from the fun but all in all it’s a good series to play with a friend. Very long to complete and you gotta be a real nerd to enjoy it but we all are since we are on Morty. Feels good to be a Bysshe. I would not consider this an escape room in a box at all. More an interactive puzzle novel. Also your experience will be very incomplete if you only played one volume and stopped so make the choice to do it all or don’t do it.
