A new family has just moved into your neighborhood. They've invited you to dinner to get to know you better. You buy a fancy bottle of wine and head to the dinner party. After knocking the door multiple times, no one answers. You hear some strange noises from inside. You knock the door again, harder, still nothing. After pushing the door a little, it opens. “Hello there, is anybody home?” The door slams shut behind you & you hear the locking noise of the padlock. You're horrified! You try hard to open the door, but there is no way out. You're stuck inside this scary house. You have one hour to get out. Good luck: You'll need it!

echoing other users by saying the space is severely underutilized. GM is such a nice guy, and knows how to spook the scaredy-cats in a group. I’d still go back after a few years.

Multiple rooms in a large "big room". A lot of the rooms mechanics were electronic, which was great. There is a lot of unused empty space and unused puzzle spaces. It's a pretty decent escape room, and the GM was pretty cool as well.

This room was of very poor quality. It boasts being the largest escape in the mid-west, but the majority of the space is not utilized at all, or is only filled with set dec that aren't part of any puzzle at all. The props felt very homemade (grainy text on important clues, deterioration that shows answers through wear and tear, etc). There were very few puzzles all together, which weren't very satisfying or clever. On the other hand, there were several red herrings, so it was not obvious what were puzzles, especially since there were so few. There was zero plot, and a few different glimmers of story of that went nowhere. Unfortunate!

Dear Hella; We were surprised by your review, especially considering that House of Things has received over 600 Google reviews with a perfect 5.0 average, more than 100 Facebook reviews, and zero negative reviews on Yelp or TripAdvisor. Unfortunately, we cannot benefit from your feedback to improve our game, as the points you raised are not accurate. House of Things features an interconnected multi-room design with 13 different puzzles in total. Each room contains two or three puzzles, and solving the final puzzle in a room automatically turns on the lights in the next room. Only one traditional padlock and one combination lock are used — the rest are high-tech, electronic puzzles. There is no unnecessary decoration or misleading props; every element in the space is intentional. In addition, we could not find any record in our system showing that you played our game. There is no reservation under this name. If your experience had been negatively impacted by our staff, we would understand such a review — but you actually commented positively about our team. This makes it clear that your review is not objective, and we do not believe it reflects a good-faith evaluation. Out of nearly 1,000 reviews across multiple platforms, none mention the issues you described. Best regards...

This was a game that left me scratching my head. The puzzles made enough sense, but there was not enough signposting to indicate what to do next or that elements went together. Unfortunately a lot of the set dec felt very homemade, which only added confusion to the situation.

Gameplay

It was totally fine, but it felt clunky at times. There wasn’t enough signposting to make the experience enjoyable.

Atmosphere

The set felt very sparse in such a large space. It was difficult to know what was set dec and what was important to the game play.

Customer service

The GM was very lovely.

Story

The story wasn’t present at all.

I would recommend. It was a challenging room, and the room was HUGE. I liked the jump scares. It definitely fit the ‘feel’ of the room. I appreciated that they didn’t use too many padlocks also. It was mostly electronic/magnetic/physical puzzles.

Gameplay

I wouldn’t say it was novel, but the puzzles were good and some were quite challenging.

Atmosphere

This room was HUGE. Like, the size of a small house. They have a clever way to direct you to the right places though. I was worried that just four people wouldn’t be able to do this room, but it worked out. It was a little dark, but it fit the theme. There were some jump scares too when triggering puzzles. It was great!

Customer service

The GM did a good job. He was friendly and not overly helpful, but quick to respond when hints were needed. He gave hints without just telling you how to solve things.

Particularly interesting or different

No

I guess the size of the room made it a little different. It was well decorated also. The puzzles were good, but nothing out of the usual for escape rooms.

Story

No complaints. I think I’ll remember the room better than the plot though.

Difficulty

Hard

I would be surprised if anyone could do this room in an hour without using any hints.

Game tech

High tech

There were only two padlocks in the whole room. I appreciated that. I know padlocks do help give you some direction as to what you need to accomplish, but I felt like they found a good way to give that same direction without using padlocks excessively.

Scary

Scary

This room wasn’t directly scary, not like a haunted house or anything. However, there were some jump scares mixed with a general spooky vibe.

Minimum age

16

If you’ve got some particularly clever younger ones, they’d probably do okay. This room had some challenging puzzles though.
