For years there have been rumors of a shadow girl scout troop operating in the Boston and Cambridge area. Over the last week, you’ve been earning your Automotive Engineering badges in the local auto body shop. Little did you know that the auto garage is owned by the high council of this shadow troop, and they have been covertly watching you. They have hand-picked you and your team to have the chance to join their secret society, and last night, each of you received a rare invitation to meet there today. You will have one hour to prove to them you have what it takes to earn the ultimate girl scout badge, and a coveted place in their troop.

I’ve admittedly always assumed this was a one to one copy of Outside the Box’s excellent game of the same name and theme, but recently, I reread the review and actually realized the gameplay and story flow is very different. While I really appreciated that game’s gritty vibe In terms of difficulty and grotesque plot twist, Red Fox has taken the baseline game and smoothed it into a more polished, fluid experience. Everything from the set to the effects to the narrative justifications for the puzzles has been improved, especially in regard to that game’s aforementioned unusual plot. The first act is largely the same, yet in the newer, more purposefully staged environment the gameplay is far more seamless. Puzzles reappear throughout the game, but the most interesting portions are not only original in their game design, but also explore the characters and their motivations a lot better. I hold the original Body Shop dear to my heart, and I consider this experience to be equal in its own way. Red Fox took a diamond in the rough and, through polish, reworked gameplay, and a more coherent narrative, turned it into something cinematic and strange.

Gameplay

The game flows very well, integrating itself into the set and story as well as making use of interesting inputs.

Atmosphere

The environment is great and has a ton of detail in its presentation of both theme and story

Customer service

We had a breakage (our fault) and they were very understanding.

Story

This remains one of the most unique storylines I’ve seen in an escape room.

I can’t stop thinking about this game! Incredibly impressive and immersive set design, genuinely clever and surprising storytelling, and puzzles that require items and tools you’d actually find and use in a repair shop. Plenty of surprising moments that had us thinking, “we get to do that?!” What also stood out to us was the room’s adaptive gameplay. The game adjusts the number of puzzles seamlessly based on your group’s speed of solving. All types of groups will be rewarded with a full hour of puzzle solving. A must play in the Boston area. It’s Girl Scouts law.

Gameplay

The adaptive game play should fill your hour with puzzles, no matter how fast or slow you’re moving through the game. The puzzles themselves were just plain fun to solve, sometimes getting to do things we’ve never been allowed to do in an escape game before. They all felt very appropriate given the environment, and the puzzles themselves helped us uncover the story little by little, which made them that more fun to solve. We were temporarily locked out of one mechanism after we thought we had the correct answer three times, which briefly interrupted an otherwise perfect flow of the game. Even though we were definitely wrong three times, we almost wish a different input mechanism with unlimited attempts was used, especially on a puzzle where guessing the solution seemed unlikely.

Atmosphere

Completely blown away by the set design, props, lighting, soundtrack, and environment. One of the most immersive games I’ve experienced.

Customer service

We had a lovely chat with an owner before the game and had a great experience with our GM who showed us how the adaptive gameplay was designed after our experience.

Particularly interesting or different

Yes

One of a kind storyline full of fun surprises.

Story

A unique story that I’ll remember for years to come where a simple objective slowly reveals more than meets the eye.

Difficulty

Hard

Hard to put a finger on difficulty with the adaptive gameplay, but skews more difficult if you’re trying to experience all of the puzzles. We loved that the game included symbols over a couple of puzzles that marked suggested starting places. The room can be a lot to take in at first (in a great way).

Game tech

High tech

Some really cool effects, tools, and mechanics to play with during your game. The occasional lock is used when it makes sense for the environment.

Scary

Not scary

Adult content, but no jump scares or anything frightening at all. A content warning can be found on their website.

Minimum age

13

Despite the role of Girl Scouts, you will come across adult themes that may not be appropriate for young ones. A content warning can be found on their website.

Accessibility

Intro is given verbally by a staff member. Hints are given using text on a screen. A couple of puzzles require color differentiation for solving, but the vast majority do not. One small bump to step over during your game, otherwise completely flat. Could be tight for someone using a chair, but I’m sure they’d be happy to discuss before you book. Lobby and games are one floor below street level via a flight of stairs or elevator.

Easy to find location

Parking

This will be an all time favorite of mine firstly for the great use of props as puzzle pieces and the hilarious plot twist mid game. We played 2 people and finished with a few minutes to spare and had a fantastic time following the storyline with the puzzle reveals. Some degree of seek and discover with mostly one logical step to solve each enigma but super creative ways to integrate the enigmas into the story line. Must play when in Boston 🥰

Fun puzzles and lots for us to do individually and also as a group. Liked that the room can actually be modified to work for smaller groups or groups that were slower.
