A few weeks ago, the curator-art restorer of the Cabinet Mysteriis, Léon Wallace, started to work on a new piece for the collection. This “Ultimate artwork” – as he called it – obsessed him such that he no longer comes out of its office, where he shut himself with the painting. Nobody has seen him for days and weird sounds can be heard from his office…

Puzzles and set were decent, and became more interesting the further we progressed. On the minus side, the GM frequently came into the game during the first room, acting (in character) as a confused secretary and wondering what we were up to. This didn't advance the plot or add anything to the experience, and was disruptive - I'm pretty confused why they kept doing it. Maybe there was no camera/audio feed of the room and they had no other way of tracking progress? Maybe they couldn't think of any justification for giving hints remotely? Maybe they found some players didn't ask for help when needed? Whatever the reason, it felt bad.

Staff was welcoming, but the GM's frequent intrusions were unwanted.

Live actors

No

I don't consider the unwanted GM intrusion to be a live actor, even though they were technically a person in the space. There wasn't any interaction and they didn't add anything to the game by being present.

Magnum Opus is probably the least “Cabinet Mysteriis” of the three I played, which makes sense as it was purchased from the excellent yet now closed Codex. It was definitely the least impressive set wise, but that’s in comparison to some of my favorite sets I’ve ever seen. This is truly a puzzlers game, with a really awesome series of tactile and interesting puzzles seamlessly baked into the set. The opening was a series of excellent quick hit solves, and as we progressed we used several interesting inputs and mechanisms to work our way through a Lovecraftian nightmare. Being the least typical of the games I played, it lacked the character interactions that were some of my favorite moments, but a strong and unnerving voice over added a sense of personality to the theming, in addition to some clever in character game mastering. If you like puzzle games with a focus on strange interactions, I would definitely recommend this game, it is a blast.

Gameplay

Incredible gameplay driven by environmental solving and excellent aha moments.

Atmosphere

There could be a little more theming in a few aspects, but a lot of really interesting and unique set pieces.

Customer service

Our gamemaster was excellent and helpful in a very thematic way!
