Escape From The Haunted Manor

We had our eyes on this one for a while and finally managed to play it before its imminent closure (Aug 30). And I can definitely understand why it’s being retired. The vast majority of the game was just hunt and seek, with only a couple of fairly easy puzzles. The live actor interaction added a fun and mildly scary layer to the experience, but having the GM standing right there in the room with you throughout the entire game was one heck of an immersion breaker. I can imagine this room being considered quite scary and innovative when the original version was released more than a decade ago (the current iteration launched in 2023), but it now has the look and feel of a game that’s way past its prime. PS: Our team of 3 played this with a Japanese couple (we got through it with their broken English and my crappy Japanese, without needing the translation machine they provided) and it actually enhanced the experience because the girl’s screaming made it scarier for us lol.

A carefully curated and well-presented experience! This captured the pressure and excitement of solving puzzles like in Ao Oni. For a 40-minute room, we felt that the puzzles were on the quicker side, primarily to cater to audiences unfamiliar with escape room mechanics and to make the puzzles multi-language accessible. This business has done a great job accommodating English speakers by extensively offering rule videos to explain Japanese context-sensitive situations. I think the minor drawback of having to verbosely explain these concepts were worthwhile. If you're a group, consider booking the whole space, as solo tickets can occupy the room with others. There may be a language barrier if you aren't proficient in Japanese due to that.

Excellent game with a tense and scary atmosphere! Communication with staff was somewhat limited by language barrier, which may have been an issue if we’d needed more hints but staff were friendly. Definitely recommend!

This game is very scary - (think weeping witch level of scary) but is so much fun!!! There are a bunch of jump scares and the puzzles are great! We played with Japanese speakers and it was such a good experience! I would highly recommend this room!

Few puzzles and would be very easy except it’s time constrained to 40 minutes. Puzzles were straightforward and intuitive. 2-3 people would probably be ideal, because there isn’t a lot to do. The hide and seek aspect was exciting.

This was a super unique experience to play with individuals who speak different languages! Each player is given a small, translator device to wear and use to help communicate, but it was also fun trying to find other ways to communicate with the group. The puzzles were simple and not language-dependent. However, the simplicity of the puzzles did not minimize the overall quality of the experience, in my opinion. There is a live actor in the room and it got truly spooky sometimes! The game master is also in the room with you, and they are helpful making sure the group stays on the right track (in all languages). Would I fly all the way to Japan just for this room? No. Would I recommend it if you're already there? Absolutely!

We were 6 and had an awesome time. It was such an exciting game with that touch of suspense and jump scares. We were all adults so it was mainly a fun scary experience but for kids it could be pretty scary.

9.5/10 One of the scariest and realest escape room ever - I was so scared I wanted to dip halfway, whichever has never happened before, but of course I would never do that! I stuck it through, was terrified and screaming the whole way and loved every second of it. Storyline, realistic puzzles and immersive experience were all top tier. Would definitely recommend!

Love this room! Personally as a non-horror fan and don’t play rooms with live actors that much, this room has just the right amount of scares. Puzzles in this room are relatively simple and straightforward and don’t add much to the story, the focus is more on the horror experience. There are a few jumpscares and interaction with live actor which makes the room more immersive. I love the set design, a realistic Japanese house which integrates well with the story. Interactions with the live actor are also logical. GM stays in the room for hints. I think some people may think that it breaks the immersiveness a bit, but for our group of 2 non-horror fans, our GM acts as our emotional support. Despite the language barrier, our GM still tried to use simple English to communicate with us and encourage us to explore the spaces, ensuring us to enjoy the most out of the room. We are given an ending of the story after we escaped, which wraps up everything well. This room is also completely English friendly, hints and story are all available in English. Would definitely recommend if you are interested in slightly scary room and are looking for a horror experience more than a puzzle solving room.

I want to like this game. It has a good concept, fun interaction with actor, and somehow exciting. This game is mainly about searching. However, the room is FULL of do not touch stickers. They could simply just fix things down. Big immersion breaking. There is also a sliding cabinet I could open and has NO do not touch sticker on. I took some stuff out from inside the space that wasn’t supposed to be open and started trying to find clues. The GM didn’t even know or try to stop us, until my husband checked with the GM. Smh. Room is also beat up. There is a puzzle doesn’t even make sense, but I am fine if it is intuitive enough. Unfortunately, it is not. The worst of my experience was the GM. I personally don’t like GM being in the game, but it is fine if they don’t have a control room to monitor the game because I understand some companies just don’t have the space for it. However, our GM didn’t seem like want to be there. She refused to give us a hint or even a nudge. She has no idea where were we. We played the Red Room two days ago and had a much better GM. If you want experience and no puzzle, this is for you, and I wish you get a better GM than we had.
