This isn’t just an old house — it’s a playground of forgotten memories. Somewhere inside are half-finished games, curious puzzles, and strange little clues left behind by a child who once filled these rooms with imagination. Things have been left out of place. Music boxes have gone quiet. The story isn’t over… and you’re the one meant to finish it. Step through the wardrobe. Bring the pieces back together. And maybe — just maybe — you’ll hear the melody that was never played.

What an impressive and spacious room! Superb theming combined with hi-tech puzzles and cinematic moments to deliver Mission’s best non-live-actor room to date. Definitely on the easier side (by Mission’s standards) but still challenging enough for enthusiasts to have a fun and engaging experience.

Mission Room Escape have cooked up an absolute doozy with their newest room, The Unplayed Melody. True to Mission’s signature style, it leans heavily on mechanical interactions — solve a puzzle, and you can expect something to trigger or shift. But what sets this one apart is the beautiful backstory woven through the experience, which carries real emotional weight from start to finish. Like most of Mission’s rooms, this is a fairly large experience, spanning several spaces — and each one is cleverly designed and visually stunning. The aesthetics are on point, with nothing out of place. Every puzzle feels purposeful, feeding into the story and elevating the journey. Difficulty-wise, I’d rate it easy to medium. It’s very accessible for newer players but still packed with enough content to satisfy even the most seasoned escapers. All in all, an extremely well-executed room.

Arrived about 5 minutes late due to horrible Sydney traffic in pretty torrential rain, our GM seemed a bit annoyed and tried to make it very clear we were late and would not receive our full amount of time. However, the tone seemed to have changed and relaxed a bit as we went on.

A blend of cinematic moments and narrative-driven puzzles forms the breathtaking experience that is ‘The Unplayed Melody’. This is Mission Escape’s most story-centric experience yet — and it is stunning. While some puzzle elements felt slightly clunky or ambiguous — and one puzzle malfunctioned — we played ‘The Unplayed Melody’ within its first few weeks of opening, and it’s rare to launch a room that doesn’t require further iteration. Despite slowing our progress in one area, these issues didn’t hamper our enjoyment or appreciation of how ambitious and exciting the entire experience was. An emotional narrative unfolds across a beautifully crafted sequence of rooms, with moments where players must pause to watch a scene play out through clever use of electronics and programming wizardry. The transitions from puzzling to passive viewing felt well signposted, aided by lighting and audio cues. While the puzzles are easier, this allows the narrative to take centre stage — resulting in a deeper, more meaningful experience. ‘The Unplayed Melody’ offers an exciting glimpse into the future of narrative-focused escape room design and is well worth prioritising.

We radioed to say that a puzzle had malfunctioned, but were told the puzzle answer must have been wrong. After another five or so minutes, we radioed again and fortunately they came in, realised it was wrong and skipped the puzzle. It did take 10 minutes from start to finish to notice the error, communicate about it, and skip the puzzle, which was disappointing but we understand these things can happen in any room.

Another absolute cracker of a room from the Mission Team.

Gameplay

A few clever new tricks, and a good number of puzzles tie into the musical theme

Atmosphere

This room features quite a lot of 'cinematic' sound and light shows that help set the mood and build tension, and they're quite well done.

We're pretty used to the Mission style of puzzles, and everything is pretty well clued, but newer players might struggle a little. The extra time (80 mins) also gets eaten into quite a bit by the cinematic sequences

We managed fine with two, but there is one puzzle in particular that would have been much easier with more people

Sometimes you had to close a drawer properly to get things to trigger, but our Gamemaster warned us about this up front and it wasn't much of an issue

One puzzle had us running around a bit but this wouldn't be an issue with larger groups

Accessibility

There's a lot of audio-based puzzles and a colour one too. Everything is within easy reach and the rooms are fairly large. The first room appears to have a more accessible entrance as well.

It's in the city, way easier to take public transport

This room contains some of the coolest mechanical effects I've seen and each puzzle has enough variance. They are a bit on the easier side but I think less experienced teams will definitely be challenged by this room. There are little mini shows in the room and they help elevate the story and the creepiness of the room! You always know what you need to focus on since it will be the only illuminated thing in the room.
