Boda Borg Boston Quests
Boda Borg - Boston
Escape room
Other
In concept, Boda Borg is exceptional: numerous escape room-esque challenges that you choose to do as many times as you want. At its best, Boda Borg offers deeply immersive set design that envelops you in a world and then forces you to think outside the box and communicate effectively. At its worst, it presents you tedious puzzles with unreliable tech that makes you wonder if the failure is performative (yours), mechanical (the tech’s), or conceptual (the designer’s). Overall, Boda Borg quests are very good, but I can’t whole-heartedly give this a heart when quite a few rooms have lazy design and/or non-cooperative tech. Boda Borg does teach teams that (as Yoda once said) “the greatest teacher failure is.” For people who have the patience, mental wherewithal, and physical stamina, Boda Borg is a unique and memorable experience. Is it perfect? No. But isn’t the notion of perfection something that Boda Borg rails against conceptually?

The Nest is an emotional rollercoaster that surrounds you with the ephemera of a person’s life as you experience the highs and lows of their story. In terms of puzzles, there’s maybe two or three interactions that qualify; however, if you are looking for a game, you’re missing the point. The set is abstract, ever-morphing, deeply immersive (smells, smoke, and a variety of intimate scenes), and yet truly easy to follow. Your next step is obvious, but the experiences that await you never are. The Nest marks a way forward for escape rooms: emotion catharsis and truly impactful lessons delivered through immersive environments and intentional interactions. This should really be saved for one person or a close couple. Leave groups for the escape rooms. You may cry. You’ll almost certainly feel something profound. You will definitely remember The Nest long after you visit.

Qua qua qua! What a bonkers experience! 6 actors for 8 players/audience members?! The show is the game, and the game is the show?! Nothing about this makes practical sense, but that's the joy of it! It's excessive, it's absurd, it's electric.

Feels odd to call this an escape room, but this is immersive entertainment at its finest. Between the large-scale interactive art, the in-depth branching story, the in-character interactions with staff, and the commentary on our society’s obsession with profit over humanity, THERE IS SO MUCH TO LOVE. It’s without a doubt one of the most staggeringly beautiful and impressive things I’ve ever taken part in.
