Escape room puzzling at the highest level. The game kicked off in a very memorable way, before an hour full of challenging yet satisfying puzzles. Plenty of puzzle types we’ve never seen before, too! The lighting and artwork made us feel like we were making our way through an actual art gallery, where puzzles slowly started to reveal themselves upon closer inspection. If you have a few escape rooms under your belt and you enjoy puzzle solving, you will be greatly rewarded with this game.

Gameplay

Some of the best puzzles I’ve seen in an escape room setting. The puzzles made us stop and really think in new ways, which resulted in elegant and satisfying solutions. A fair number of types of puzzles we hadn’t encountered before, including one that took a common escape room mechanic and turned it on its head in a unique way. We really admired the hint system. We were notified when a hint was available/suggested, but it was totally up to us whether we accepted the hint or waited a bit longer. I wish more games used this system, telling players that a hint might be useful while leaving the opt-in hints 100% in the hands of the players.

Atmosphere

Minimalistic set design made the set pieces, lighting, and props really pop. Really loved the way the game blurs the line between artwork and puzzle. Although there is a lot to do puzzle-wise, take the time to read the artwork descriptions around the gallery for some good laughs.

Customer service

Tess was one of the best GMs we’ve had who immediately got us excited for the world of the game, suggested a hint at the perfect time, and made sure we had a fun experience.

Particularly interesting or different

Yes

Although we’ve encountered art gallery themed games before, this one does it incredibly well.

Story

The intro to the game immediately raised the stakes and quickly introduced the storyline, which was clear and easy to grasp, while also feeling urgent. The final puzzle revisits the story in a particularly fun way.

Difficulty

Expert

I wouldn’t recommend this game for your first-ever escape room, and the website is also upfront about the difficulty. Would definitely recommend if you have a few games under your belt and enjoy puzzling. A game that will likely challenge enthusiasts, too! Despite an “expert” rating here, the puzzles are still completely doable, fair, satisfying, and enjoyable.

Game tech

Mechanical

Although the game leans a bit more toward lock-based solutions, there is still a fair amount of tech-based puzzles and fun effects.

One player will need to do something other than walking/standing.

Accessibility

Even though it’s an art museum, this game felt very color blind friendly. A puzzle that uses colors also includes symbols to differentiate its colors. One puzzle uses colors without symbols, so I can’t speak to differentiating those colors. Intro was given verbally by GM. Hints were given via text. One player needs to do something more physical than standing/walking. One small space is inaccessible with a chair, but the rest of the space is very open and should be easy to explore if using a chair. Games are on a different floor in the building than the lobby, but large elevators are provided.

We took public transit, which stops nearby!

A LOT of fun for two people, but we needed some hints as we got closer to the end. This is my favorite type of game - loaded with locks, keys, and buttons. I preferred this over Magician's Study because of the sheer number of puzzles and their variety, but I do think Magician was more thematic. Storyteller remains on my list for now! Non-spoiler favorite puzzle: "Lovers Bridge"

Particularly interesting or different

Yes

I would say yes. It's my favorite museum theme so far.

Story

Silly but not particularly logical.

Difficulty

Medium

It's only difficult because of the number of puzzles. The final puzzle was a logical leap for me: there's no reason doing X should've revealed Y... Not sure how many people could get that without a clue (indeed, the GM said almost everyone needs a nudge there).

Ideal number of players

We had 2, which was an absolute blast, but we knew it was going to be harder with 2. I'd say 3 or 4 are ideal unless you like the challenge and/or ok with nudges.

Was anything broken?

No

Live actors

No

Not really. The GM plays a small role at the beginning.

Physically active

Somewhat

With 2, there will be a bit of running and crawling needed to get out in time. With 4, someone will need to crawl, but less running as you can cover more area with 4.

Accessibility

Accesible as long as one person can crawl, but I'd recommend having at least two people who can move around quickly. There are a lot of puzzles scattered about! Color discernment is required for at least one of the puzzles.

Fun story line, fun room. On the difficult side but had a great time none the less. Doable with two people but definitely targeted towards a larger group.

I brought a group here for a party and we had a blast! A nicely dense and nonlinear puzzle room, with several unusually clever "aha" moments.

Really interesting and different room. Puzzles were much different than most rooms we have done. We got stuck on the last puzzle but that was just us being dumb. Super easy to get to by Green Line to Government Center….its right next door!

This game was really hard and we definitely needed some clues to help us through. We did it with two, but it would really be best with at least 3. Our GM was a gem and helped us out!

A sleek and well designed twist on the heist concept. Puzzles were varied, well clued and organized. Felt logical and orderly throughout. While possible to complete with two, a third or even fourth set of eyes would help tame this challenging room

We were told that you should have a minimum of 4 people for this, but we were able to escape with 2. Teamwork is key during this room. There is a high volume of puzzles and they require a good amount of brainpower at times. Definitely recommend this room.
