2002: L'Odyssée Bovine [2002: A Bovine Odyssey]
Cabinet Mysteriis
Escape room
IRL
We had a great time playing this laugh out loud funny game! You are a farmer in a spaceship that you built from a grain silo, trying to retrieve your prize cow from the aliens who abducted her. This game has a clever set, great puzzles, and a terrifically weird story!
Amazing Adventure Society: The Forgotten Room
The Other Tales Escape Rooms
Escape room
IRL
Fun exploration of an adventure society’s artifacts to solve a mystery. Average room with average difficulty. Enjoyed the puzzles. While the GM wasn’t that experienced, he was super friendly and really seemed to enjoy being part of the experience.
Whatever Happened To The Garretts?
Maze Rooms - West LA
Escape room
IRL
Apart in Time: A Whispering Halls Adventure
Enchambered Live Escape Room Adventure - Online
Escape room
Virtual
This is a really cool 2-player online game. Each player only sees their part of the game so communication and well-coordinated interaction are key. The graphics and mechanics of play are high quality. This is part of a series of excellent games from Enchambered, but all can be played independently.
Area 53
Bust Out Escape Room - Paseo
Escape room
IRL
Bust Out consistently does a good job with immersive sets and Area 53 is one of their best. There were a couple of interesting original features In this room I haven’t seen in the 400+ games I’ve played, including plenty of space-themed ones. You are in a station on the moon and your team of scientists has to figure out what went wrong with the genetic experiments before it’s too late. I don’t want to spoil the fun, but there are challenges to overcome and info to analyze. I liked the integration of both tactile and logic puzzles. We progressed through the room in a somewhat linear fashion as the story moved us along, which in this room worked really well. I recommend playing this game as well as Jumanji and Doomsday Bunker at Bust Out.
Arizona Shootout
Escapology - Austin
Escape room
IRL
Escapology games suffer from being consistently mediocre. The scenery for a western setting was minimal. The puzzles loosely tie to the theme but are poorly designed. Red herrings in the room seem to be more like orphan props from puzzles that were abandoned from the game long ago. The room is very lock heavy, but the locks aren’t coordinated to the game. For example why have color-coded locks if irrelevant to the puzzle? (Not a spoiler.) I’ve played several games at this venue and other Escapology locations and just wonder why such a large chain can’t up their game. Disappointing.
Boardwalk Blast
Escape Garden State
Escape room
IRL
Fun room but only had minimal Boardwalk themed activity. More arcade themed. Some original ideas to their puzzles but otherwise a standard escape room with easy puzzling. Kid and beginner friendly, very good for a birthday party. Recommend for sentimental reasons because I always want to be down the shore. Play this game, and tell them you found it in Morty!
Carbon: 3708
Mission Escape Games
Escape room
IRL
We played Carbon 3708 after End of Days and found them to be very similar: combination of mechanical and technical puzzles with minimal story. While one member of our team found the set boring, I felt it matched the dystopian theme. Carbon was more tech-driven than End of Days. If you are limited for time and have to choose between the two, I liked Carbon better.
Christmas Story [VR]
Virtropolis VR
Escape room
IRL
VR for the holidays! Very cute game appropriate for all ages with really fun surprises. First time trying VR at a business versus the PlayStation VR at home. It was fun playing with another player in the virtual world, and this game can handle multiple players. The owners were very personable hosts. I look forward to trying other VR games at Vitropolis.
Club Drosselmeyer 1944
Green Door Labs
Escape room
Virtual
Unusual and fun phone-based interactive radio show. This is an online version of popular Boston-based immersive theater game event, now in its 6th year and 2nd time remote. I imagine this would be really great in person, dressed up in 1940’s costumes and having drinks in a ballroom while solving riddles. Otherwise, it was a very simple game to play.
Dracula's Castle
Escape Room Extreme
Escape room
IRL
Dracula’s Castle is an average escape room with some nice atmospheric touches. Gameplay is mostly linear with standard puzzles. Decor fit the theme, but there were some distracting issues like exposed wires that diminished the scenery. We enjoyed playing the game. The adjacent Par Pub looks like fun, but we didn’t have time to play there.
